Traveling During COVID-19 FAQ
Have questions about traveling during a pandemic? We’ve got you covered
Does everyone remember when countries and resorts closed down and travel ceased to be a word people used in their daily vocabulary? We are far from that time now. Most countries are open for tourism, especially Mexico and the Caribbean. Resorts are operating, drinks are being poured, and vacations are being enjoyed. We have put together a list of questions we frequently get asked by our clients to help guide those curious about what travel is like amidst a pandemic.
Q: What vacation destinations are open?
A: Most vacation destinations are open at the moment and include: Florida (Disney and Universal Studios), US national parks, Hawaii, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Barbados, Bahamas, and many more. Some countries, like Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Barbados along with Hawaii, require you to present a negative PCR COVID test a few days before departure in order to be allowed on the island. Countries like Mexico and the Dominican Republic do not require a negative COVID test upon entry, but do require visitors to fill out a health questionnaire upon arrival. Book with a trusted travel agent (like us!). Travel agents will help prepare you for your travels to make the process go as smooth as possible.
Q: Are some countries still closed?
A: Yes, Europe, Tahiti, and most of Asia are all currently closed to tourism. There is no re-opening date yet.
Q: Do I need to have a negative COVID test to fly back to the US after being abroad?
A: Yes, the CDC announced that all travelers returning to the US from abroad will be required to produce documentation of a negative COVID test (antigen or PCR), or documented recovery from COVID-19 in the last 90 days. US states and territories are exempt from this rule. This brings up a crucial point. Be careful where you book your next trip. For instance, it may be very difficult to find a testing facility if you rent an Airbnb or VRBO abroad. Please read the full CDC order HERE.
Q: Are Mexico and Caribbean resorts offering free testing?
A: Yes! There are many resort brands that are conducting free COVID testing on-site for all their guests. Make sure you book with a reputable resort brand such as Sandals, Couples, AM Resorts, Playa Resorts, Karisma, or Melia. There are many other resort brands that are conducting free testing as well, the resorts mentioned above are just some of our favorites.
Q: What happens if I test positive and cannot return to the US?
A: Most reputable resort brands are offering guests free or reduced cost accommodations to quarantine at the resort. Again, we cannot stress this enough, be very careful where you book your trip. Most travel agents know exactly what resorts to recommend to provide you with peace of mind.
Q: Are resorts operating at full capacity?
A: No, almost all resorts are operating at a reduced capacity in order to help maintain strict cleaning and social distancing protocols. Some amenities may be altered or closed. Sadly, some amenities such as swim-up bars may be closed in order to help promote social distancing. Don’t worry! You can still get as much as you want to eat or drink from other bars, pool servers, or restaurants as you can handle.
Q: Can I still go on excursions while abroad?
A: Yes! Most excursion companies are fully operational. You may be restricted to book with approved companies in certain countries, but a good travel agent will know which ones fall on the approved list.
